The junior filter groups postings by the responsibility level described in each posting. Nextmove reads responsibility level from the work described in each posting, so the filter does not depend only on whether the employer uses “junior” in the title.

If you are finishing school or have recently graduated, start with the work described in the posting. A title such as “new grad” is useful evidence, but it does not tell you whether the role is a software engineering role, a customer delivery role, or a mix of both.

The remote filter groups postings that state a remote work arrangement. The page says to check each posting for residency restrictions and travel requirements. “Remote” describes the work arrangement read from the posting. It does not mean that the job can be done from any country or without travel.

The senior filter groups postings that Nextmove reads as senior responsibility. The list can include senior individual-contributor work, customer deployment, and technical leadership. Read the responsibilities because titles and scope vary.

The visa-sponsorship filter groups jobs where sponsorship is stated as available in the posting or in Nextmove’s reading. It is a starting point for review, not a legal determination. Confirm the visa type, timing, location, and eligibility with the employer.

Data and integration FDE jobs make a product fit the systems around it. The work may involve APIs, data pipelines, identity, schemas, cloud and on-premises boundaries, workflow automation, and the people who use the result. The job title can vary widely; the responsibilities reveal whether the role is building a working connection or only discussing one.

An engineering manager FDE role is responsible for the team that delivers customer-facing or internally deployed systems. The manager may still contribute to architecture and delivery, but the defining work is building the team, setting priorities, staffing engagements, coaching engineers, and creating a repeatable operating model. A senior title alone does not establish that a job manages people.

Production AI FDE jobs are about making an AI product work for a real customer after the demo. The work can include architecture, application code, data and identity boundaries, evaluation, deployment, security, and operational follow-through. A title may say “forward deployed engineer,” “customer engineer,” or “applied AI”; read the responsibilities to see whether the role owns production outcomes.

A technical lead FDE is accountable for technical direction across a customer or delivery area while staying close enough to the work to make sound decisions. The role may set architecture and standards, lead difficult delivery, mentor engineers, and still contribute to code or design. “Lead” does not automatically mean people manager; check whether the listing assigns hiring, performance management, or team staffing.

Solutions engineering can be a useful route into forward deployed engineering when your work continues after the demo.

Backend engineers already work with APIs, data stores, reliability, and production trade-offs.

Implementation and data engineers often have the delivery experience FDE teams need.

An FDE title does not tell you what you will build, who you will work with, or what remains yours after deployment.

Hiring an FDE starts with a business problem, not a title.

Start with the work your FDE will do, then look for people who have done that work under another title.

Set FDE compensation from the work, level, location, and total package you are asking someone to accept.

An FDE interview should show whether a candidate can take an unclear operating problem, build the right technical solution, and make it work with the people who will use it.

Decide who must own the work, how long that ownership lasts, and what the customer or internal team needs after deployment.

Organize an FDE team around the work it must complete and the decisions it can own.

An FDE job description should let a candidate answer four questions before applying: What customer or user problem will I own?
