What the postings say
Browse individual contributor roles, technical lead roles, and people manager roles. Read the full posting before deciding whether the role fits your next step.
How the categories differ
An individual contributor role centers on delivering work without formal people-management responsibility stated in the posting. A technical lead role includes leading technical work across a project or team. That can mean setting direction, reviewing designs, coordinating delivery, or handling difficult implementation decisions. It does not by itself mean hiring, performance reviews, or direct reports.
A people-manager role states responsibility for managing people. The posting may also require hands-on delivery or technical leadership. The category tells you that management is part of the stated role. It does not tell you the size of the team, the balance between coding and management, or the company’s management practices.
Questions to ask before you compare roles
Ask who reports to the role and what formal responsibilities come with that relationship. Ask whether the role carries a team budget, hiring decisions, performance reviews, or only technical coordination. For a technical lead role, ask who makes final technical decisions and how the role works with product, sales, and customer teams.
Also check whether the job description’s title matches its responsibilities. A “lead” title can describe technical ownership without people management. A manager title can still include substantial coding or customer delivery. The posting’s work and reporting expectations are more useful than the title alone.
