Engineering manager FDE jobs

An engineering manager FDE role is responsible for the team that delivers customer-facing or internally deployed systems. The manager may still contribute to architecture and delivery, but the defining work is building the team, setting priorities, staffing engagements, coaching engineers, and creating a repeatable operating model. A senior title alone does not establish that a job manages people.

The responsibilities to look for

The Afresh Founding Senior Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering posting is explicit: build, hire, and lead the team; direct execution and staffing across conenterprise customer engagements; own technical relationships and delivery roadmaps; and define shared deployment architecture, production standards, and customer-cloud exceptions. It asks for experience scaling a team from zero to one and managing engineers in a services, post-sales, or forward deployed organization.

That mix shows why an FDE manager is more than a delivery coordinator. The manager has to decide which work can become a shared platform capability, where a customer exception is justified, and how engineers are supported when several engagements compete for attention. The role still needs technical credibility because the manager is responsible for the quality of architecture and the safety of production delivery.

The Citigroup lead posting describes mentoring engineers while contributing to architecture, code, and delivery. Those responsibilities establish technical leadership, but do not by themselves confirm direct reports or performance management. Check those duties separately when deciding whether a lead posting is a people-manager role.

IC lead, manager, or both?

Use these questions to identify the actual job:

  • Does the role hire, coach, and evaluate direct reports?
  • Does it own staffing across accounts or only its own project?
  • Does it set delivery standards and review operating risk?
  • Does it remain accountable for customer relationships and escalations?
  • Is hands-on coding an expectation, an occasional contribution, or a preferred background?

What to ask an employer

Ask how many engineers and customer engagements the manager owns, how staffing decisions are made, and what is already standardized. Ask whether delivery is measured by launch, adoption, reliability, customer outcomes, or another stated result. Ask what support exists from product, platform engineering, security, and recruiting. If the job is a founding manager role, ask which processes are expected to be created: hiring, onboarding, architecture review, incident learning, customer escalation, or project planning.

Clarify travel and work location early. FDE teams may work directly with enterprise customers, but the listing may not state how often travel occurs or who pays for it. Ask what the team operates after launch and how customer-specific work is fed back into the product. Those answers reveal the real span of the role better than a title such as “head of” or “senior manager.”

If you are moving from an IC lead role, prepare examples of coaching, prioritization, hiring or interview design, and difficult staffing decisions. If you are moving from engineering management into FDE, prepare examples of customer discovery, technical delivery, and decisions made under customer constraints.
