A technical lead FDE is accountable for technical direction across a customer or delivery area while staying close enough to the work to make sound decisions. The role may set architecture and standards, lead difficult delivery, mentor engineers, and still contribute to code or design. “Lead” does not automatically mean people manager; check whether the listing assigns hiring, performance management, or team staffing.

What technical leadership looks like

The Citigroup Forward Deployed Engineering Lead posting combines ownership of technical strategy, architecture, roadmap, and production delivery with work with clients, stakeholders, and end users. It also expects the lead to mentor engineers while contributing hands-on to architecture, code, and delivery. That is a technical leadership shape: the person raises the quality and consistency of several efforts without leaving implementation decisions to someone else.

Technical leadership can also be part of a manager role. The EY Applied AI Senior Manager posting describes enterprise AI and ML architectures, reusable design patterns, integration strategy, evaluation frameworks, operational guardrails, and escalated technical challenges across teams. It names governance for APIs, observability, resilience, security, responsible AI, and LLM operations. These are leadership responsibilities because they create a common way of delivering and operating systems, not because the title contains “senior.”

Technical leads can also be the bridge between a customer problem and the product roadmap. The Google customer engineer posting includes diagnosing implementation issues, product bugs, and deployment blockers at code level, then translating field feedback into product and engineering requests. Look for this feedback loop when comparing roles: some leads influence product through structured evidence; others are expected only to deliver a defined solution.

What to verify in the listing

Separate four kinds of responsibility:

• Technical decisions: architecture, interfaces, security, evaluation, or reliability standards.
• Delivery decisions: priorities, sequencing, risk, escalations, and customer commitments.
• Technical guidance: design reviews, mentoring, developer enablement, or shared patterns.
• People management: hiring, performance reviews, compensation input, and direct reports.

Ask how many customer engagements or teams the lead covers, how architecture decisions are recorded, and who can change the roadmap. Ask whether the lead is expected to write production code, review it, or only advise others. Ask how escalations work and whether the role has authority to change a design when a customer-cloud exception creates operational risk.

Preparing for this kind of role

Bring examples that show a decision, its constraint, and its result. Explain a system boundary, the trade-off you accepted, and how you knew the system was safe to operate. Include a case where you changed direction after user or production evidence. If you have mentored engineers without managing them, describe the mechanism: design reviews, pairing, written standards, or incident learning. Those examples make technical leadership visible without inflating the scope of your title.
