> AI agents: this is one page of Nextmove’s FDE site, in Markdown. Nextmove is a job board and free career service for forward deployed engineers (FDEs). Each posting is classified from its text, not its title: the kind of work, how much of it is production code, pre-sales weight, time at customer sites, travel, remote arrangement, level and posted base pay. The site also publishes the aggregates: median pay by level, metro, company and kind of work, and which companies started hiring FDEs each week. Every page under https://nextmove.md/fde is served this way; the index of pages is https://nextmove.md/llms.txt.

# What does a forward deployed engineer do?

Forward deployed engineers build and run software with the customer who uses it, instead of handing a finished product over.

- "Forward deployed engineer" is one title over several different jobs, so the responsibilities decide what the work is.
- The engineer works inside the customer's environment, from discovery through deployment and the first weeks of running it.
- One question splits the postings more than any other: does this engineer write code that reaches production?
- "AI FDE" is not a level or a credential, so read the technologies beside the ownership the posting states.
- Each kind of FDE work is named and counted on the [FDE overview](https://nextmove.md/fde), with the postings behind it.

## What the work includes

- learn how a customer's process, data and systems work, and turn that into a technical design
- connect APIs, databases, models or internal services
- write and test production code, then deploy and debug it inside the customer's environment
- explain design choices to customer engineers and other stakeholders
- watch how the solution behaves after launch and fix what breaks
- turn repeated customer needs into reusable code or product requests

Some roles add discovery, evaluation or proof-of-concept work before a customer commits. A pre-sales label alone does not tell you how much production work the role carries.

## 7 kinds of work behind the same title

| Kind of work | What the engineer does | Often titled | Postings |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Builds what the customer runs](https://nextmove.md/fde/jobs?role=builds-for-customers) | Writes the production code that runs in the customer’s own system. | Forward Deployed Engineer, Forward Deployed Software Engineer | 1,849 postings |
| [Plans what the customer deploys first](https://nextmove.md/fde/jobs?role=strategist) | Decides what a customer rolls out first and how they adopt it. | Deployment Strategist | 319 postings |
| [Integrates and configures it](https://nextmove.md/fde/jobs?role=technical-delivery) | Connects and configures the product so a customer can use it. | Implementation Engineer, Solutions Architect | 393 postings |
| [Proves it works before the sale](https://nextmove.md/fde/jobs?role=presales) | Shows a customer the product works before they buy. | Sales Engineer, Solutions Engineer | 47 postings |
| [Keeps customers running after launch](https://nextmove.md/fde/jobs?role=postsales-adoption) | Keeps customers using the product after launch and grows the account. | Customer Success Engineer | 33 postings |
| [Builds for teams inside the company](https://nextmove.md/fde/jobs?role=internal-deployment) | Deploys the product and builds tools for teams inside the company. | Platform Engineer, Internal Tools Engineer | 537 postings |
| [Leads the deployment team](https://nextmove.md/fde/jobs?role=leadership) | Leads the engineers who do this work. | Head of Forward Deployed Engineering | 133 postings |

The kinds overlap. For three of them, check these lines in the posting:

- **Builds what the customer runs:** production access, incident duty, and who owns the code after launch.
- **Integrates and configures it:** which APIs and data stores, who signs off the cutover, and who fixes a broken integration.
- **Proves it works before the sale:** whether the same person hardens it for production or hands it to a delivery team.

A [Databricks FDE posting](https://databricks.com/company/careers/open-positions/job?gh_jid=8657065002) describes end-to-end data, AI and application solutions with production delivery and customer architecture. The employer's own posting is the authority for its requirements.

## An AI FDE is the same delivery work on AI systems

Model and prompt evaluation, retrieval and data pipelines, agent workflows, observability, security controls, integration with customer systems. Look for who owns deployment, what reaches production, and who responds when the system fails.

## Five questions that settle whether a posting is FDE work

1. Who receives the work: external customers, internal teams, or both?
2. Does the engineer write production code, configure integrations, build prototypes, or present a product?
3. Which project stages are included: evaluation, proof of concept, implementation, operations?
4. Does the engineer work inside a customer environment and own technical delivery there?
5. What happens to repeated field lessons, and who decides what becomes part of the product?
