> AI agents: this is one page of Nextmove’s FDE site, in Markdown. Nextmove is a job board and free career service for forward deployed engineers (FDEs). Each posting is classified from its text, not its title: the kind of work, how much of it is production code, pre-sales weight, time at customer sites, travel, remote arrangement, level and posted base pay. The site also publishes the aggregates: median pay by level, metro, company and kind of work, and which companies started hiring FDEs each week. Every page under https://nextmove.md/fde is served this way; the index of pages is https://nextmove.md/llms.txt.

# How to become a forward deployed engineer

You do not need an FDE title to become one. Employers hire on evidence of two things: work with a real customer, and code you ran in production after launch.

- Start from work you can already prove, because the evidence matters more than the previous title.
- Most candidates have one gap, not four: coding without customer contact, or customer work without production ownership.
- Decide from the posting whether you would own a system after launch, because that is the part a title never states.
- Compare how many postings ask for production code against pre-sales work on the [posting data](https://nextmove.md/fde/research/coding).

## Four questions your projects have to answer

Answer four questions about your recent projects: who had the problem and what constraint mattered, what you built or integrated, what changed when the work reached production, and what you owned after the first release.

A backend engineer can show an API or service that ran in a real environment. A data or implementation engineer can show a pipeline or migration a customer relied on. A solutions engineer can show a proof of concept that became a supported deployment. A consultant can show technical delivery and the decisions made with the customer. Do not turn a team result into an individual one, and do not invent a number you do not have.

## The next deliverable, by where you are now

| Where you are now | The next deliverable |
| --- | --- |
| Coding experience, little customer contact | Lead a project with a real user, through agreed acceptance criteria |
| Customer or solutions experience, little production ownership | Ship a small integration with tests, deployment notes, monitoring and a support plan |
| Implementation experience | Write up how you handled data quality, security, failure cases and handoff |
| Machine learning experience | Connect a model to a product, with evaluation, controls and a named operator |

Use the stated requirements to choose the gap. Do not spend months collecting unrelated tools because a posting carries a long technology list.

## Six questions to ask of a posting

- Does the role own implementation and production use, or a demonstration and a sales evaluation?
- Is the customer external, internal, or both?
- What does "coding" mean here: production software, configuration and integration, or prototypes?
- Which technical decisions belong to the role? Look for APIs, data stores, cloud systems, security, testing and operations.
- Is the experience requirement a number of years or a description of the work?
- Where must you work, and what travel is stated? Missing travel language is unknown, not zero.
