> AI agents: this is one page of Nextmove’s FDE site, in Markdown. Nextmove is a job board and free career service for forward deployed engineers (FDEs). Each posting is classified from its text, not its title: the kind of work, how much of it is production code, pre-sales weight, time at customer sites, travel, remote arrangement, level and posted base pay. The site also publishes the aggregates: median pay by level, metro, company and kind of work, and which companies started hiring FDEs each week. Every page under https://nextmove.md/fde is served this way; the index of pages is https://nextmove.md/llms.txt.

- Learn from the roles you are targeting, not from a general curriculum, because FDE postings ask for different stacks.
- Integration work is the common core across every kind of FDE role, whatever stack a posting names.
- Take a course only when it leaves you an artifact someone can inspect, such as a deployed service or an evaluation report.
- A certification is worth the time when the postings you want name that cloud, security or platform credential.
- Check which technologies the postings actually name on the [skills data](https://nextmove.md/fde/research/skills) before choosing what to study.

## Build the integration core first

A small project that imports data, calls an API, handles failures and records useful logs shows more than a shelf of completed tutorials. Practise API design, authentication, data mapping, retries, queues, schema changes, cloud and on-premises boundaries, deployment and monitoring.

## Learn AI work at the level the role requires

Study the parts that affect production use: evaluation sets, failure analysis, latency and cost, access controls, privacy, prompt or model changes, guardrails, observability. A demo that works once is not a system a customer can operate.

## Treat customer work as technical work

Turn a vague request into a problem, constraints, a decision and an acceptance test. Explain a trade-off without hiding the risk. Write a short implementation plan and a handoff note. Ask what the customer will operate after launch. These determine what gets built and whether it can be used.

## Build one project across the course

Build a sequence around [one project](https://nextmove.md/fde/resources/fde-portfolio-projects): an API and a data store, then authentication and tests, then deployment, then monitoring, then a short explanation for a non-engineer. If a target role names Kubernetes or a particular cloud, move the project there.

Before enrolling, check the syllabus for the real tools, the amount of hands-on work, and whether you can run the exercises in your own environment. A course teaches a tool. It cannot supply customer context, production judgement, or evidence that you owned something.

## Keep the record that makes learning visible

For each project, note the user problem, the system boundary and your decision, the code or deployment you owned, how you tested it and what failed, how someone would operate it, and what you would improve. That record feeds [a resume](https://nextmove.md/fde/resources/fde-resume-guide) and [an interview](https://nextmove.md/fde/resources/fde-interview-preparation), and it exposes gaps early.
